Dreams to Concrete Designs- We are hiring!

As we usher in a new year our doors are open to aspiring interior designers, last year when we began our search to expand our team the response was overwhelming. We were met with a myriad of portfolios.

However, a crucial observation emerged. The submissions showed a clear lack of  strong portfolios with designs that tell unique stories of passion and imagination and technical training. We noted that designers with a background in architecture displayed careful detailing and precise shop drawings, setting them apart from designers with a background in interior design, who relied on simple 2D plans and 3D images. While aesthetics were important, functionality sometimes got overlooked. This highlighted the need for a balance between aesthetics and practicality in the industry.

A common thread was the tendency among some interior designers to either over-design or under-design. In the 3D images we noted lack of continuity in design styles, which then at the end rendered uncertainty of the design style of the space.  It was like listening to a song without a clear distinctive genre.    Architects, on the other hand, displayed a unique ability to infuse practicality into their designs, striking a harmonious balance between imagination, balanced continuity and functionality.

The lack of technical proficiency among certain interior designers is a shared concern within the industry. This observation was not only ours but also resonated with leading practitioners in the field, including the likes of local architect @Shabani Mwatawala who often states the importance of keeping one’s imagination in check by ensuring designs blend with creativity and purpose. As professionals, we have to possess an understanding of the technical aspects of this industry.

For aspiring interior designers, the key lies in honing their technical skills and attention to detail. Creating spaces that are not just visually appealing but also functionally sound. Striving for a delicate equilibrium between aesthetics and functionality should be the guiding principle in every design endeavour.

One impactful way to showcase this expertise is through the inclusion of technical drawings in portfolios. These drawings serve as a testament to an individual’s ability to translate abstract design concepts into tangible, actionable plans. We urge aspiring interior designers to prioritise this aspect in their portfolios. By doing so, they demonstrate their capacity to create spaces that not only captivate the eye but also serve a purpose, reflecting a deep understanding of the craft.

Continuous learning and development are indispensable in any creative field, and interior design is no exception. Aspiring designers must actively seek out training programs that emphasise technical knowledge and attention to detail. By investing in education and skill development, designers can carve a niche for themselves in the industry, aligning their creativity with technical prowess.

In the wise words of our esteemed colleague, Director of Architectural Pioneering Consultants Limited, @Dark Gummich, “Designing is a result of process reflection.” This means that great designs come from careful thought and consideration. As you explore your creative journey, it’s essential to think deeply about your ideas. Aspiring interior designers should remember that being successful requires both imagination and technical skills. Creative Studios Limited is excited to see a new generation of designers who can balance creativity and expertise, shaping the future of interior design.
