Here, at Creative Studios Limited, we take immense pride in celebrating the milestones of our talented team members. Today, we shine a spotlight on Nelson Gerald Shao, whose journey is a remarkable testament to growth, perseverance, and excellence. Graduating in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Nelson joined our team in February 2022 as part of an on-the-job training internship program. Alongside another graduate, Nelson embarked on a demanding yet rewarding path, continually learning and honing his skills under the watchful eye of our senior project manager and quantity surveyor, Sylvia Mtendamema. By October 2022, his dedication and hard work culminated in a transition to a full-time position. Today, we celebrate Nelson’s exceptional achievement in completing a high-end residential project, underscoring the value of internships and the immense growth they can foster.
Nelson faced numerous challenges. The project he was assigned to encountered several hurdles. Despite these setbacks, Nelson remained focused and determined. There were also significant delays while waiting for finishing materials. His ability to resume work swiftly once the materials arrived and navigate the project’s complexities showcases his resilience and thirst to learn. Completing this project under such conditions is a testament to Nelson’s growth and serves as an inspiration for future graduates.
When discussing the Mbweni project, Nelson’s enthusiasm for contemporary design and technological advancements shines through. He highlights the harmonisation of interior works, balancing aesthetics with functionality, and the use of high-end materials. The attention to detail, particularly in areas like the master bedroom headboard and the kids’ bathroom, and the focus on sustainability with environmentally friendly materials, exemplify the project’s excellence. Nelson’s ability to articulate the client’s vision into a functional and aesthetically pleasing reality stands out as a key success factor.
Nelson’s role on this project extended beyond traditional quantity surveying responsibilities. As a site manager, he meticulously planned and followed the work program, supervised the project to meet specifications, and managed costs to prevent overruns. His coordination with the interior design team through drawings, specifications, material boards, and schedules ensured seamless integration of design elements. Regular site reports, meetings, and communication facilitated quality control and alignment with the design vision.
Managing high-end residential properties involves dealing with expensive, often imported materials that require careful handling and storage. Nelson emphasises the importance of educating construction workers on using these materials, closely supervising the work, and ensuring that all details are perfect. His meticulous approach to procurement, storage, and installation of high-end materials highlights his dedication to delivering quality while adhering to the client’s budget constraints.
Nelson’s strategy for balancing budget constraints with the desire for high-quality materials involves maintaining value for money while advising clients on the long-term benefits of certain products. By obtaining and negotiating quotations from high-end suppliers and presenting the most responsive quotes to clients, Nelson ensures that quality is never compromised.
Key factors in evaluating the cost of materials and labour include the quality and quantity of materials, labour costs, complexity of work, location, and project timeline. Nelson also considers risks and contingencies, emphasisingthe importance of careful planning to mitigate unexpected challenges. His approach ensures that high-end properties are built to the highest standards while managing costs effectively.
Technology plays a vital role in Nelson’s daily work. He uses Microsoft Project for planning and management, communication apps like WhatsApp and Zoom for coordination, and software like AutoCAD and ArchiCAD for measurements. Document management is handled through Online Capsule, and reporting and presentations are done using Microsoft Office tools. Nelson’s commitment to continuous learning is evident through his attendance at seminars on the latest industry technologies.
For Nelson, the most rewarding aspect of this project is delivering the final output as per the design. Seeing the project come to life, matching the drawings, 3D renders, and specifications, brings immense satisfaction and pride.
Nelson’s journey from an intern to a project leader is a tale of discipline, dedication, and continuous learning. We hope it serves as an inspiration to other graduates, showcasing the importance of internships and the values and growth they bring. As we celebrate Nelson’s achievement, we also celebrate the potential that lies within every aspiring professional in the industry, waiting to be unlocked through opportunities and perseverance.
