Just like Mount Kilimanjaro, which is Tanzania’s pride and joy, boldly taking up space and boasting its beauty, as interior designers, we think in terms of scale, proportion, balance, form, and shape.
When it comes to scale and proportion as an interior designer starting a project from scratch, we prioritise harmonising functionality with aesthetics. Ensuring that the proportions of the space align with its function is paramount. Whether it’s a residential haven or a commercial space, the balance between ample space and the placement of key elements contributes to a design that not only looks stunning but also works seamlessly for its intended purpose.
Take, for example, our Ishengoma renovation project, which we are currently fitting out, where we meticulously considered the form, shape, and balance of the already built and semi-fitted space to tailor this design. This project has been an interesting challenge endeavour for us as we had to come up with innovative solutions to design and work around pre-existing decorative ceilings and walls. The added complexity of the existing features made it an intriguing undertaking, requiring us to think outside the box and have a different approach creatively.

At Creative Studios Limited, we assess the architectural form and pre-existing site conditions, taking into consideration elements such as spatial flow and architectural features. We understand the inherent form of a space as it sets the foundation for a cohesive design. Elements like structural components, and spatial transitions guide our design decisions. For us, it’s about enhancing the existing form and creating a visual narrative that complements the architecture.
In the same project, we converted what was once the end of a hallway into a reading and music room for this semi-retired renowned lawyer who loves entertaining as much as reading, to achieve this design, we consulted with our client on the following: understanding their personal design style, who they are and how they intend to use the space. With this, and after the technical drawings were done, we were then able to advice on the furniture and fixtures; proposing furniture that balances comfort with sophistication, incorporating bespoke bookshelves for their extensive collection, and curating ambient lighting to create a cozy yet well-lit atmosphere.
